Society of Professional Journalists

San Francisco State University Student Chapter

Who we are:

A nationally renowned organization of journalists, including print, magazine, television, radio and photographers. The organization is broken up into regions and then into chapters. The San Francisco State chapter falls under the Northern California Chapter and region 11.

What we do:

In the SFSU chapter we get guest speakers who talk about what they do and how they do it. Past guest speakers have included: Ray Ratto, Sports Columnist of the San Francisco Examiner; Harry Lin, reporter with KQED-FM; Susan Yoachum, Political Editor with The San Francisco Chronicle; John Carmen, TV Columnist with the San Francisco Chronicle; Tyler Bridges, reporter with The Times-Picayune and author of a book on David Duke. We also sponsor the annual Golden Gater/Prism awards banquet. There is no limit to what we can do at State. Whatever the interest in journalism, we can cover it.

SFSU also holds workshops on trends and hot topics facing journalists today. Past workshops include a region 11 convention on "Way New Journalism", held at SFSU. Future workshops will include one on how to publish documents on the World Wide Web.

Meetings are on an as-is basis. Notices of meeting times are posted on the SPJ bulletin board, put in Golden Gater/Prism boxes and listed in the meetings notices section in the Golden Gater.

What NoCal Does:

The Northern California Chapter holds workshops on freedom of information rights, privacy rights and ethical issues. It also sponsors awards banquets honoring local journalists, including students.

What National Does:

National provides support for students and working journalists by giving them up-to-the-minute information on trends and federal policy regarding journalists' rights to information. It also provides a network of 14,000 journalists with experience in all different media. National hosts conventions as well, which are a great source for networking with other reporters, editors and producers.

The Benefits for Students:

If you like networking, care about the ethics of your profession, want access to public records and are seeking a job or internship in the near future, SPJ is the organization for you. One of the biggest perks of membership, besides your very own SPJ card, is the "Jobs for Journalists" service that provides internships and jobs listings before they run in newspapers. SPJ is a fantastic networking source, and of course looks good on a résumé. You also get Quill, a dream magazine for journalists who want the inside scoop on what's happening in their profession.

Costs:

Student rates are $34, half of what the professionals pay.

Who to Contact:

Tiare Rath is the chapter president. Call her at (415) 338-3313 or (408) 356-7578. Or e-mail: spj@sfsu.edu

Membership forms are available at the following locations: The SPJ box in the Golden Gater newsroom (NHUM 308), or the SPJ box inside NHUM 305. Fill one out and leave it in the box in NHUM 305, and we'll pay for postage.
