SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards announced

Region 11 SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards for student journalists were announced today during the conference. Arizona State University was awarded the sweepstakes award, which was determined by awarding five points for first place awards, three points for second place and one point for third. The winners are:
- Editorial writing: third place, Christopher Allan Smith from Cal State Chico; second place, Jake Batsell from Arizona State and first place was Robert Anglen from San Francisco State University.
- Editorial cartooning: third place, Allan McCorkle from Cal State Chico; second place, Bryce Morgan from Arizona State and first place was Stacy Holmsted from Arizona State.
- Column writing: third place, Olaina Gupta from UC Santa Barbara; second place, Ann MarJory Kaminsky from Arizona State and first place was Roxane Marquez from University of California at Los Angeles.
- Spot news reporting: third place, Robert Anglen and Ken Alltucker from San Francisco State University; second place, Golden Gater May 24 edition reporters from San Francisco State University: Martin G. Reynolds, Carl D. Holcombe, Ty Tagami, Cynthia Walker, John Wisyanski, Audrey Wong, Eva Martinez, Raquel Kuhn, Pia Christensen and Ken Alltucker and first place was Christina Koenig from UC Berkeley.
- In-depth reporting: third place, Elliott Zaret from UC Berkeley; second place, Elizabeth Appelen from Arizona State and first place was Jackie Spinner from UC Berkeley.
- Feature writing: third place, Jeremy Fry from Point Loma Nazarene College; second place, Ann MarJory Kaminski from Arizona State and first place was Jackie Spinner from UC Berkeley.
- Sports writing: third place, Lisa Conderinger from Arizona State; second place, Randy Satterberg from UCLA and first place was Lawrence Ma from UCLA.
- Best all-around daily newspaper: third place, Daily Bruin from UCLA; second place, Spartan Daily from San Jose State and first place was the Daily News from UC Santa Barbara.
- Best all-around non-daily newspaper: third place, Golden Gater from San Francisco State University; second place, Lumberjack from Humboldt State and first place was the North Gate Observer from UC Berkeley.
- Non-fiction magazine article: third place, Jackie Spinner from UC Berkeley; second place, Maureen Garretson from University of La Verne and first place was Clea Benson from UC Berkeley.
- Best all-round student magazine: third place, Access from San Jose State; second place, Prism from San Francisco State University and first place was The Pacific from UC Berkeley.
- Spot news photography: third place, Chris Kaufman from Cal State Chico; second place, Carlos Gonzalez from San Francisco State University and first place was Cindy Russell from San Francisco State University.
- Feature photography: third and second places, Michelle Eades from San Francisco State University and first place was Ethan Miller from Arizona State.
- Best sports photography: third place, Rachel Weill from UC Santa Barbara; second place David Bridges from San Francisco State University and first place was Craig Macnaughton from Arizona State.
- Radio feature: Cal State Northridge students swept this category with Jim Mauceri getting third, Michelle Goodman getting second and Kent Coloma getting first.
- Radio in-depth reporting: third place, Jim Mauceri from Cal State Northridge; second place, KCSN news staff from Cal State Northridge and first place was North Gate Magazine: Rebecca Liss, Kora McNaughton and Rachel Gotbaum from UC Berkeley.
- Radio sports reporting: third place, Jason Wilmot from Cal State Northridge; second place, Keith Drucker from Cal State Northridge and first place was Bruce Bradley from Cal State Northridge.
- Radio newscast: first place was the KCSN news staff from Cal State Northridge.
- Television spot news reporting: second place, Abe O. Moore from Arizona State and first place was Anne Patrick Burnett from Cal State Northridge.
- Television feature: third place, Will Thomas from San Jose State; second place, Suna Chang and Sheila Muto from UC Berkeley and first place was Gina Maravilla from Arizona State University.
- Television in-depth reporting: third place, Will Thomas from San Jose State; second place, Kerri-Lee Halkett from Arizona State and first place was Edward Kountz and Lisa Rose Weaver from UC Berkeley.
- Television feature photographs: second place, Anne Patrick Burnett from Cal State Northridge and first place was Jeff Barr from Arizona State.
- Television newscast: third place, Update News, KTEH, San Jose State; second place, Valley View staff from Cal State Northridge and first place was Around and About Orange County News of Rancho Santiago College.
