Amid swirling lights, swinging dancers and flowing alcohol, the DNA Lounge has opened its doors again with a flourish. New owners Tim Dale, and John and Rob Schneider of Saturday Night Live fame, have re-opened and improved the South of Market night club.
The DNA Lounge, founded November 1985, has been known for its progressive live musical performances and DJ dancing, a trend the new owners hope to continue by booking national touring bands and hot local artists.
The club now boasts earth-toned murals by W.E.T. Studios, an improved lighting and sound system, and a re-vamped VIP room. Also planned is the installation of interactive multi-media equipment with video and graphics.
The DNA Lounge offers something to do six nights a week. Tuesdays feature live and DJ dancing to alternative music, Wednesdays are funk and soul music, Thursdays are swing, retro and rockabilly music, while on the menu for Fridays is Bazaar night, featuring DJ dancing, tattoo artists and fire eaters, among others. Saturdays are DJ dancing nights and Sundays feature live alternative, industrial and punk music.
The club, open to those 21 and over, has an intimate feel, with private rooms and sitting areas. They offer beer and numerous mixed drinks, which are competitively priced and strong. Doors usually open at 9 p.m. and the cover charge varies. You can find the DNA Lounge at 375 11th Street. (415) 626-1409.
