Go For the Juice

by David Fujii

Forget the fancy coffee shops with their false intellectual crowds and overpriced beans. Coffee has zero nutritional value and does nothing for the body and mind-there is a better drink. Your mom doused you with it by the gallon as a child, but it's not kid stuff anymore-we are talking about juice. Squeezed, pureed, or smoothied, it is the best stuff around.

How about a shot of orange juice to ward off those colds or a little carrot juice to help the vision?

Fortunately, nowadays we are offered more juice choices than just fresh-squeezed or concentrate. Right down the block from San Francisco State University at Stonestown Mall is the Surf City Squeeze. They offer a variety of lemonades to choose from, including regular, raspberry, and strawberry.

Competing for the lemonade profits a hundred feet away is the Hot Dog on a Stick. There, employees plunge the lever on a machine that squishes lemons into juice.

But for a superior juice product we must move away from the mall. The L'Avenida Juice Bar at Seventh Avenue and Irving is the perfect place to satisfy your juice needs. Banana-orange, banana-pineapple-coconut, and banana-strawberry-peach smoothies are available to cool you off. These are fresh fruits blended with ice to make a thick and refreshing beverage.

For those of you who want to take the vegetable approach, this place has plenty to offer. Drinks include the Healthy Choice, containing tomato-cucumber-parsley-celery-lemon juice, and the the Smart Choice, made up of a carrot-orange-celery-beet juice combination. Protein, honey, and egg can be added for an extra 50 cents.

With variety like this you won't want to go back to java. Leave the coffee beans for Juan Valdez, and go for the juice.
