The Otter and the Trout

by Merrily Wright
(Written after the Department of Fish and Game did a trout survey at Mary's River Ranch during drought season )

Two endangered species sittin' in the water,
One was a trout, one was an otter;

This crik, said the one,
is dryin' up some.

And the otter sat thinkin' by the water in the sun.

Endangered trout still made otter drool.
Watchin' the Lohantan swimmin' 'round his little pool.

Who's more endangered now
me or you?

Said the otter to the trout in the dryin' up pool.

Trout just stared from his muddy warm niche,
At the sleek furry otter and wondered which

one o' them would make it
off of that list.

And otter stared back at the muddy warm niche.

Otter thought, "I really ought'er resist ,
But, I don't like being on that list ."

Trout looked fat
trout looked fine

Otter stopped thinkin' and began to dine.

An official came, of the government sort,
A big agenda of trout to report.

He looked in depth
At the muddy warm pools,

But all he found were otter-like stools

After he searched the drought up and down
He made a report at his desk in town.

It was clear from the facts
the data was strong

Cows drinkin water 'swhere the blame belonged.

Otter took a scratch in the warmth of the sun
He thought, I sure got away eatin' that one.

I really ought'er not
let cows take the rap

As otter in the sun took a long warm nap.
