In a true reflection of our times, an information overload coupled with some kinks in changed software made calling from SF State last week about as easy as using America Online.
Faculty and staff returning from winter break Monday all seemed to pick up their phones at the same time, giving up to one-quarter of callers a slow dial tone, Telecommunications Manager Michael Grodzicki said.
One phone cabinet which holds 700 lines was almost at maximum capacity before school started, Grodzicki said, and simply went into overload when the calls came in.
Software changes also made fewer lines available, making it difficult to call off-campus and giving some callers a busy signal.
These problems were temporarily resolved by transferring lines into freed-up phone cabinets and ironing out the problems with the software. However, Grodzicki said there are plans for an entirely new system by the end of the year because SF State is "fast approaching (having) too many extensions."
