Don't just talk about it - take some action

Golden Gater Onlineby Marcita Keys

OK, here's the deal. I've been approached several times on campus this semester about what the Gater is not covering and about what has been covered. Basically there has been a lot of nagging

and senseless whining. Many people are outspoken when talking to me about the paper by voicing their ideas and opinions. I wish they would just take it up a notch.

You can take it up a notch in a number of ways. If you're looking to see more interesting stories in the paper or have very strong opinions on certain issues, put your words where your mouth

is. Put your views and ideas on paper and send them to the Gater. Venting out loud only goes so far. Even a phone call to voice your ideas would be appreciated on certain issues.

And although there are some that write in profusely, there is still a lack of writing coming from the many diverse groups on campus. SF State is considered one of the most diverse campuses in the Bay area and with the submission of many different opinions we can have a more diverse campus paper. Writing to the Gater on how you feel or presenting story ideas can spark action, change, or just serve as a platform to voice your opinions. Ida B. Wells, a successful journalist of the late 19th century, was known for her powerful use of the pen. At a time when lynchings were prominent around the country she would often write in opposition to the crimes. She stirred awareness, debate, and even controversy through her writings.

And mind you, this is not only as a message out to the students of this campus. This is extended out to the entire campus community. That includes professors, administrators, and even the school vendors.

You know who you are. Some of you talk under your breath about the Gater but many of you should just "Put it in writing," like AT&T would say.

This issue cannot be stressed enough. At a time when there are issues directly affecting college-age students and higher education we all need to become more vocal. The Golden Gater belongs to all of you. It is your campus paper so take part in its development by voicing how you feel.

Well, with that in mind have a wonder spring break and come back refreshed and ready to write. Yeah right!
