Baseball

The SF State's baseball team went 1-for-3 with CSU Hayward last weekend, but remained atop the Northern California Athletic Conference heading into the final week of conference play.

The Gators (21-9 in the NCAC) lost to the Pioneers 5-1 on Friday before splitting a doubleheader on Saturday.

Pioneer pitcher David Ordahl (6-4) held the Gator offense to just four hits in SF State's loss on Friday.

With a 1-0 lead, the Pioneers rallied in the top of the fourth when

Steve Tahsler led-off the inning with a double down the left field line. Tahsler advanced to third when Gators pitcher Jason Isaacs committed an error on Michael Poulin's sacrifice bunt.

With runners at the corners, Matthew Taylor hit a line single to left and the Pioneers led, 2-0.

Hayward scored two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice ground ball and a misplayed fly by Gator center fielder Wayne Northern.

The Gators scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Joey Gandara led-off the inning with a double into deep right field.

Jorge Macias advanced Gandara to third with a single to the left-center gap.

With runners at first and third, J.C. Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to center. The Gators closed the gap to three.

The Pioneers added a run in the eighth to cap off their victory.

Isaacs (6-5) threw six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out six and walked one Pioneer hitter.

The Gators' pitching gave up nine hits while the defense committed four errors in the loss.

The Gators split a doubleheader on Saturday against Hayward, winning the first game 5-4 and losing the night cap, 4-3.

SF State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with Dereck Ornelas' run-scoring double.

Hayward came back and scored runs in three consecutive innings, taking the lead, 4-2. The Gators retaliated and took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth.

Eric Rafter recorded his second win of the season for the Gators.

Gators pitcher Joey Diaz, who leads the NCAC in victories with nine, relieved Rafter in the sixth and gave up just two hits in recording his seventh save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Gators took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Pioneers answered and tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Hayward added to its lead in the third.

The Gators scored their last run of the game in the top of the fourth, but Hayward answered with an insurance run in its next at bat.

The Gators host Sonoma State in a doubleheader today beginning at noon before closing out their conference season hosting Chico State on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at noon. All home games will be played at Maloney Field

Track and field

SF State's track and field athlete Noue Mulitalo placed first in the women's discus (143.00 ft.) and the women's hammer (138.01 ft.) at the Chico Invitational last weekend.

Gators Christina Mixon placed third in the hammer (131.05 ft.) and Vernon Lee placed second in the men's javelin (174.07 ft.).

The NCAC Championships begin tomorrow at Chico State and will run through Saturday.

Softball

SF State's softball team ended its season by dropping a doubleheader to Sonoma State on Friday, 5-2, 11-1.

In the opener, Cossacks pitcher Scarlett Creeger threw a complete game and held the Gators' offense to just three hits.

SF State pitcher Kim Cordoni threw seven innings, gave up five runs (none earned), five hits and struck out two.

The Gators pitching staff gave up 13 hits in the nightcap as the defense committed four errors.

The Gators end their season with an 8-47 overall record and 1-23 in the NCAC.
