A night jammed with Def Comedy

by Mari Kaups

On Wednesday evening, laughter from more than 100 people was heard throughout the Creative Arts Building.

The Associated Students of Performing Arts presented, "A Nite of Def Comedy" with four well-known comedians that have all previously appeared on programs like Def Comedy Jam and have performed at the Apollo Theatre in New York.

The Master of Ceremonies, Karen Addison, came out dancing to loud music and started her act with enormous energy that carried through the entire show.

Addison, who is from Detroit, Mich., joked with couples that were sitting near the front of the theater and also made fun of female issues, such as a visit to the gynecologist.

After Addison prepped the crowd, she ended with telling them to practice safe sex and wear a condom -- a theme which ran throughout the entire show.

Shuckey Duckey, the next performer, also came on stage to loud music, which seemed to pump everyone up as they cheered, clapped and hollered.

His first joke made fun of SF State for not having a football team. He continued with stories about his own life during college and how he was undecided throughout his college career, and broke.

"What made the comedians funny is that they made fun of things that students can relate to," Marlon Jones, a senior majoring in black studies, said.

Duckey also brought up the O.J. Simpson trial and said it made him angry that it was on all the time interrupting his favorite soap operas.

The audience's laughter signaled they agreed with Duckey.

The next comedian, Kool Bubba Ice, made the crowd laugh without having to say a word when he walked out in gold pajamas, a big hat and crocodile slippers.

His jokes revolved around making fun of different television shows and actors such as "Good Times," Bill Cosby and the character Tony Montana from the movie "Scarface."

"The guy in the funky clothes was funny," Michael Dunkin, an SF State sophomore said.

The final act came from "Hamburger" Jones, who is currently on an American tour and has appeared on HBO comedy shows.

Jones also made fun of SF State, by referring to it as being cheap because they made him take the Greyhound bus to San Francisco and wouldn't pay for his hotel room.

At one point the audience seemed to start to slow down, but Jones soon had the audience laughing uncontrollably after he began poking fun at different people in the audience.

When four sorority members walked in, he instantly made fun of them and when the audience couldn't stop laughing, he continued using them as part of his jokes.

"I felt like crouching down in my seat because I didn't want him to see me and say something that could embarrass me," Patricia Rosen, a liberal studies major, said.
