Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

We, the Spartacus Youth Club, are part of an international mobilization to save Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black journalist, fighter for social justice and political prisoner on death row in Pennsylvania. He is the victim of a classic Southern-style racist frame-up. As a former Black Panther Party member, supporter of the black MOVE commune, and an award-winning journalist known as the "voice of the voiceless," Jamal has fought, even from death row, on behalf of the poor, blacks and dispossessed. Tom Rigde, the new Republican governor of Pennsylvania, has promised to start signing death warrants. Jamal is near the top of the list. Time is running out. Students must join in massive protest to demand: "Mumia Abu-Jamal Must Not Die!"

Jamal's sentence is not an accident. The death penalty, hand-in-hand with the extralegal terror of the KKK and summary executions by the cops, is legal lynching to intimidate and terrorize an entire people -- and, in the case of Jamal -- to silence political opposition.

To the greedy and racist capitalists who run this country, Jamal -- eloquent spokesman for the oppressed, fighter against racist injustice -- must be silenced forever. In fighting this legal lynching, we will strike a blow against the entire apparatus of oppression. To get rid of this sick ruling class with its electric chairs, gas chambers and lethal injections requires the mobilization of the working class to seize state power. This historic task requires building a multiracial workers party to lead the struggles of the oppressed. We can build a rational socialist society that will regard these items as relics of a barbaric, bygone era.

Contact the Spartacus Youth Club at 415-777-9367 or 510-839-0851 to get involved in this fight. Raise your voice in your dorm, classes or campus group. Save Mumia Abu-Jamal! Abolish the racist death penalty!
