Volunteers needed for community projects
People who are looking for something to do over spring break can take advantage of several volunteer opportunities offered by the Community Involvement Center.
The following organizations need volunteer help:
- Project Open Hand volunteers deliver one meal daily to people with AIDS in San Francisco. Hours: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Contact Kathleen Denison at 558-0600.
- Food Bank needs people to help with the food pantry, which serves people with AIDS. Volunteers will help serve clients, stock shelves, assemble home delivery bags, sort donated food and break down bulk food. Contact Meg at 252-1931.
- The East Bay Family Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to help people build a home in East Oakland. No experience is necessary. For information: 510-251-6304.
- Hamilton Family Center, a family homeless shelter, needs volunteers to assist with children's activities and chaperone educational and recreational field trips. Hours are flexible. Contact Jon Wickstrom at 665-2100.
- The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to help staff a health fair and do general office work. The health fair is from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 12; call any time to work in the office. Contact Kathleen Helsing at 394-7100.
- The Audrey L. Smith Developmental Center needs volunteers to provide quality child care and mental health services to at-risk families. Contact Rita Franklin at 863-0909.
- St. Anthony's Foundation Hygiene Center needs volunteers for its dining center to help serve food to the homeless and poor from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Contact Joan Lucius at 391-6448.
- City of Hope is planning a national fund-raising event for AIDS research on April 8. Volunteers can contact Marie Hopper at 391-6448.
- The American Red Cross needs help with its homeless prevention program, Project Phone Bank and fund-raising. For information: 202-0644 or 202-0646.
