Former dean talks creativity

August Coppola, former dean of the College of Creative Arts, will discuss creativity and his vision for the future with SF State students, faculty and other members of the campus community. Sponsored by Associated Students Performing Arts, the lecture will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon in room 101 of the Arts and Industry building. Admission is free.

After the lecture, a reception will be held in the Casablanca Room of the Creative Arts building.

Cinema department benefit

On Friday, a benefit for the cinema department will be held at 6 p.m. It will be attended by Mayor Willie Brown, former Gov. Jerry Brown, university President Robert Corrigan and others. During the fund raiser, the department's screening room will be named in Coppola's honor.

Tickets are $75, which includes wine, a light buffet and a screening of the film, "Tales of Hoffman." Proceeds will help the cinema department provide student scholarships and new equipment.

Skills workshops

A "Finding Time" workshop, designed to help students better manage and use their time, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in room 434 of the J. Paul Leonard Library.

In another workshop, Dr. Juan Aninao will offer students strategies for dealing with college-level reading assignments and tasks. It is titled "Academic Reading," and will be held Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in room 434.

The workshops are part of "Learning and Testing for Success," a free academic skills program. For more information, call Jeanne Wick at 338- 2575.

Israeli educator speaking

Reuven Feuerstein, a cognitive psychologist and educator from Israel known for his theory on cognitive learning and development, will hold a lecture about his work Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Seven Hills Conference Center.

Sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services, the lecture is open to the campus community.

BECA professor dies

Quinn T. Millar, professor emeritus of broadcast and communication arts, died Aug. 19 in Stockton. He was 73.

Millar taught at SF State for 25 years, from 1963 until his retirement in 1988. He also served as chair of the Academic Senate's Student Affairs Committee.

A celebration of his Millar's life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club, One West Blithedale.
