Journalism Department Founder Dies

Leo Young, founder of SF State's journalism department and the Golden Gater, died June 17 after a long illness. He was 80.

Young's career at SF State spanned nearly 30 years, beginning in 1954 when he was hired by the language arts department, which later became the School of Humanities.

Young served as the first chair of the journalism department -- heading the program until 1970 when he became the dean of the College of Humanities. In 1980, Young returned to his position as the journalism department chair until he retired in three years later.

Young also founded the department's reading and resource room, which has been named in his honor.

Donations in Young's memory can be sent to the Dick Trapp scholarship fund, Salvation Army or Saint Anthony's.

After retiring from SF State in 1987, Livingston worked with San Francisco's Craft and Folk Art Museum and the M.H. deYoung Memorial Museum's Textile Arts Council.

Seiral Rapist In light of recent attacks by a serial rapist, many of which have occurred on or near university

campuses in the East Bay, SF State's University Police Department has issued an advisory cautioning students and outlining safety precautions to help prevent attacks on campus.

According to the advisory, the attacker tends to grab women from behind, usually wears a mask and sometimes carries a knife.

The UPD recommends students avoid traveling alone, especially after dark. If walking with others isn't possible, students may request a campus escort. Also, secluded areas should be avoided at all times.

Campus escorts can be contacted at extension 7200 using yellow telephones located throughout the campus. Suspicious activity or people should be reported to the UPD at 415-338-2222.

19th and Holloway Construction

Until early October, motorists can expect one lane to be closed at different points on the northbound side of 19th Avenue between Junipero Serra Boulevard and Ocean Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the California Department of Transportation, which is digging trenches for new wire piping.

For at least two weeks, two lanes on 19th Ave. will be closed southbound between Taravel Street and Brotherhood Way and northbound between Junipero Serra and Sloat boulevards from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., when the road will be closed until 6 a.m. for paving.

The California Department of Transportation could not predict when Holloway Avenue might need to be closed over the next two months, Caltrans engineer Paul Ward said.

Caltrans suggests drivers coming to campus northbound take Brotherhood Way to Lake Merced Boulevard. Southbound drivers can take Sunset Boulevard to Lake Merced Boulevard. Call the Caltrans hotline for road construction updates at 415-557-9293.
