Police Blotter

The following are selected incidents reported to the University Police Department between Aug. 23 and Sept. 1.

Bomb scare:

UPD responded to a report of a suspicious package outside of a room in Burk Hall on Aug. 30. The package turned out to be garbage. In another incident three days earlier, just past midnight, someone called and threatened that a bomb would explode at SF State within the hour. Officers conducted foot patrols until the hour was up, without finding any explosives.

Trapped in school elevators:

On Aug. 28 someone was trapped inside of an elevator on the fifth floor of Mary Ward Hall. It took 65 minutes before the person was freed. Another person was stuck in one of the library's elevators two days earlier, and was also released.

Auto theft:

One car was stolen and another was nearly stolen last week. On Aug. 23 a white two-door Honda Civic was stolen from Lot 25, off of Winston Drive. On Aug. 31 the owner of a red Toyota pickup found his door lock damaged and a screwdriver jammed in the ignition.

Bike thefts:

Two mountain bikes were stolen on Aug. 29. A blue bike was snatched from the science building in the morning, and a dark green Specialized brand bike, which was locked onto a Thornton Hall bicycle rack, was stolen sometime during that day.

Personal property thefts:

There were seven reported thefts of purses, wallets, books and backpacks during the week of Aug. 23 through Sept. 1. The most common locations for these crimes have been; the Ceasar Chavez Student Center, the bookstore, the library, and unattended offices or dorm rooms. One purse was returned to the residence apartments' lost and found desk, with its contents intact.

Emergency medical call:

On Aug. 30, officers responded to a call for medical assistance at Mary Ward Hall, where a person was shaking uncontrollably after drinking 4 or 5 "shots" of vodka and Pepto Bismol. The person has a history of the "shakes" from a nervous condition. The person stopped convulsing and refused assistance.

Harassing phone calls:

There were five reports of suspicious, obscene or harassing telephone calls, each occurring in rooms in Mary Park Hall on Aug. 26, 27 and 28. Two of the callers claimed to be from a group called "Focus Media," and preceded to ask personal questions.

Marijuana alert:

There were five reports of suspicious odors, possibly marijuana, emanating from areas inside Mary Park and Mary Ward halls between Aug. 26 and Sept. 1. In most cases the responding officers were unable to locate the source of the odors, or any illegal substances. But in one room in Mary Park Hall the inhabitants were advised of university regulations.

Vandalism:

On Aug. 30, there were two separate reports of vandalism. In one, damage was done to the men's restroom and inner stairwell inside Mary Ward Hall, and in the other a Mary Park Hall elevator was vandalized.

Difference in opinion:

There was a report made on Aug. 29, of a man near the front of the Ceasar Chavez Student Center who was harassing a group of students sitting at a table for the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. He was advised by a UPD officer on the spot.
