When Vice President Dan Quayle left Washington in 1993, a lot of stand-up comedians and columnists thought they'd be out of work. But then came the Clintons and, last week, the lords of politics just tossed us a huge softball, the size of Arkansas right down the middle of the plate - Dick Morris.
Yes, one of the president's closest advisors, the one who, according to Time Magazine had the president's ear, was caught thinking with his first name. This latest scandal to hit the Arkansas hillbillies involved Morris sharing classified materials with his little prostitute friend during their illicit relationship.
In 1992, the media and the public cried out that a presidential candidate's character didn't matter. Four years of Bill Clinton has shown us otherwise. For those of you keeping score at home:
- His counsel, Vince Foster, committed suicide under mysterious circumstances and shortly afterward, Clinton administration officials rifled through his office looking for papers.
- Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy resigned after conflict of interest charges surfaced.
- The dearly-departed Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, who was appointed to that post out of pure patronage, accepted a $700,000 donation from a Vietnamese lobbyist and as quickly as Jim Nabors can say "golly," the United States recognized the Republic of Vietnam.
- White House officials used White House helicopters to make their tee-time.
- Other White House officials gathered and illegally held personnel files of Republicans for two years.
- In the wake of Gennifer Flowers came Paula Jones's sexual harassment suit. Of course, the case hasn't gone to trial because Clinton is hiding behind his position as Commander in Chief, a tactic so low it doesn't even deserve a comment.
- We've learned about Hillary's brilliance in the cattle futures market, turning a grand into $100,000 in just six months and her ability to fire the entire Travel Office and replace them with Clinton cronies.
- And speaking of Hillary, we've seen her have a hard time keeping track of documents, with some magically appearing after a two year absence just before a subpoena was due.
- Let's not forget Whitewater, a scandal which just won't go away. So far Bill's close friend, Susan McDougal is on her way to jail and her husband is likely to follow.
- Clinton's hand-picked successor, Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker has been convicted and placed under house arrest.
Pretty amazing stuff, no? Clinton picks his aides without regard for character or integrity and we're meant to believe he has some? In the last four years, he's shown us how little character he has. Remember how gays were going to be allowed in the military? How 'bout that middle class tax cut? And cracking down on China for human rights violations?
Dick Morris is just the latest symbol of Clinton's incompetence.
I think I just hit that fat pitch high and deep ...
