Position created to reel in funds

by Corey Grice

When James Collier walks through the door of his new office in the Diagnostic Center next Monday, it will mark the first time anyone has ever done so as vice president for university advancement.

SF State has never had a vice president for university advancement before the former University of Northern Colorado and University of Washington administrator was hired on July 31.

"This is a newly created position," Ligeia Polidora, director of SF State's public affairs office, said.

"(Collier) will be overseeing the alumni affairs, the development office and he will be serving as the executive director of the foundation.

"He will cover a very broad range," she added.

The new position will also oversee communications and marketing and pay an annual salary of $122,000, according to the human resources department.

SF State President Robert Corrigan described Collier as "the clear choice" from more than 100 applicants.

"We have great hopes and high expectations for this new vice presidency, and I believe that Jim Collier has the character, judgment and skill to fulfill -- and even expand -- those expectations," Corrigan said in a prepared statement. Denise Fox, director of human relations, said there have been other similar management positions in the past.

"There was the director of development," Fox said. "This is different. It is basically being replaced with a more expanded position."

Former Director of University Development Robert I. Woods resigned in March, making Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs Paul Fonteyn the interim director.

Before Collier was hired, the director of university development oversaw development and fund raising, Polidora said. Development is a term used to describe alumni relations, fund raising and "friend raising," she explained.

"In a vice president's role," Polidora said, "(Collier) will be sitting on the president's cabinet and making decisions and directing policy at a higher level."
