Cross Country

The Gator cross country team opened up its season at the Chico Invitational last weekend with an impressive performance by Brent Butler who placed third out of a field of 57 runners in the 8-kilometer race.

Butler finished a strong second against conference runners in the 8 kilometer race, only beaten by UC-Davis' Mark McManus -- an All-American last year.

Butler's time was 26:21.2, about 46 seconds behind McManus.

"Butler's form comes at no surprise," said Gator coach Randi Lydum. "This is not the first time Butler has given McManus fierce competition."

Other notable Gator finishers were Chuck Wyckoff and Peter Fain -- who finished 9th and 10th respectively.

In the women's 5-kilometer run, Gator Ragga Thordarson finished 5th, and Kenna Masuda 6th, about two minutes after the winner: Kirsten Kabo of UC Davis.

Kabo posted a time of 18:07.6 for the win.

"We had only half our team running," Lydum said. "Obviously there are going to be stronger results when the team runs as a whole."

SF State travels to Humboldt this weekend in a meet that will be a preview for the national races on the same course in November.
