The SF State volleyball team evened up its preconference record at 3-3 with a victory over Holy Names College (0-5) -- 15-4, 15-7 and 15-5 Saturday night at the Main Gym.
Gator outside hitter Michelle Valencia led all attackers with nine kills in the match to pace SF State. Along with Valencia, Junior Pam Rigor -- who is from the volleyball-rich Santa Cruz area -- had eight kills.
Three Gators -- Kate Downing, Kris Larsen and San Francisco native Tracy Courtney -- had six kills apiece.
Setting up all the kill opportunities were the SF State setting tandem of sophomores Amy Thomas and Jen Klimek, who combined for 37 assists in the win.
Junior outside hitter Dana Steigerwald, the leader of the senior-less squad, used her defensive skills to record eight digs for the Gators. She leads SF State with 55 kills and 74 digs on the season.
Next game for the Gators will be up at the Western Invitational Tournament at Davis this weekend where SF State will have a chance to improve to 4-3 for the first time since 1988.
The last two times SF State has opened the season at 4-3, it went onto capture the Northern California Athletic Conference in 1987 and 1988.
