Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I found Chris Freud's commentary on "the presidential thing" quite disturbing. The only thing more upsetting to me than an old Republican spouting Dole's virtues is a young Republican expounding the same.

Clinton will win the election not because he's perfect (he is a politician, after all) but because, 1) Dole's old ideas and 2) the economy.

It's 1996 and no one cares about Dole's nostalgic musings on yesteryear. Besides, the economy is finally in good shape. Those who lived through the Reagan and Bush years, suffering at the hands of Republican trickle-down economics that favored the rich, currently feel no need to rock the status quo.

With very little to offer the American public, instead Dole maligns the "scandalous" Clinton administration -- seems like the pot calling the kettle black. But let us not be naive. Most of the biggest U.S. scandals were a result of Republican administrations (can we say Watergate and Iran-Contra?).

Dole has "about as much chance of winning this election as convicted killer Richard Allen Davis being voted Humanitarian of the Year" because he's done nothing to convince the American voter that he's the best choice. Reminiscing about kinder, gentler days while questioning Clinton's ethics is just not enough. Dole hasn't got a prayer.
