While most students took their last breather before school started to relax at home, taking one last breather before the hectic parking, bookstore lines and jam-acked classes once again ruled their lives, those in SF State's residence halls and apartments used Labor Day weekend to get to know other students living on campus and to familiarize themselves with the city.

Part of the moving-in process involved Gator Greeting Week, which was designed to make residents more comfortable in their new surroundings. Included in Gator Greeting Week were such programs as Sex in the Dark, ResNet, Games Night, question and answer sessions for residents and their friends and family, a barbeque, a trip to Target for last-minute necessities and an opening session at Cox Stadium to allow everyone to meet and ask questions about resident community life.

Gator Greeter Lana Morton said, "The new residents are shy at first, and this helps them meet the other residents and other people at school."

Friday night the residents had their choice of trips to North Beach, Castro or Embarcadero Center. The groups rode MUNI to their chosen area and then everyone was on their own to find the entertainment.

On Saturday, some attended the movie marathon in Mary Ward Hall's Cantina, while others spent their time sitting in the sun watching the SF State soccer teams play.

Sunday was Golden Gate Park day, and the last day of Gator Greeting Week. Students headed to the park to rent rollerblades and watch the Shakespeare festival. Nearly 300 went to the evening improv show that was planned to wrap up Gator Greeting week.

"It was the best turnout we've ever had," Morton said. "Usually for improv night we only get 50 or 60, so we were really happy."

For the athletically obsessed, there was another soccer game Monday, as the Gator women played against Cal Lutheran. However, many students spent Monday at the malls, hitting the Labor Day sales to buy as much as they could with their starving-student budgets, almost ready to start school again.
