"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" makes a comeback

Golden Gater OnlineThe play "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" returns to San Francisco for its 25th anniversary this week, with Lee A. Sprague from SF State playing Chief Bromden. Sprague is Associate Students' Assistant Speaker of the Legislature.

Lee Sankowich, Artistic Director of Marin Theatre Company, directs their production of Dale Wasserman's drama, based on Ken Kesey's novel. Sankowich directed the play in 1970 at San Francisco's Little Fox Theatre, where it broke records and played for more than five years, the longest-running drama in Bay area history. A second production in New York also broke records, gave stars acting breaks, and led to the film starring Jack Nicolson.

The story takes place in a mental institution, which R.P. McMurphy has chosen rather than face a prison sentence. He thinks he's getting off easy, but finds himself in a battle of wills with Nurse Ratched, the head nurse.

The play opens Sept. 27 at Marin Theatre Company and plays Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets or more information, call 388-5208.
