Student elections in two weeks

Elections to fill three representative-at-large seats in the Student Center Governing Board are coming up in two weeks.

The elections, to be held Nov. 15-16, will be used to

fill the three two-year term seats being vacated by Eurania Lopez, Franz Gwiazdon Julio, and Tharon Weighill, who have decided not to run for re-election.

Six students will be on the November ballot.

The SCGB is comprised of 16 members, evenly divided between administrators and students, who are in charge of a student center budget of $2.5 million.

Of the eight student members, five representatives-at-large are elected by the student body to two-year terms. The remaining three are appointed by Associated Students and have a one-year term.

Of the eight administrators on the board, five are administrative representatives. The other three seats are filled by a managing director, an alumni representative and a faculty representative.

All student members are required to be on at least two of the eight SCGB committees in order to receive a $500 monthly stipend.

The chair of the SCGB receives a $600 monthly stipend.

"The board is in charge of any budget or policy-making decisions having to do with the Student Center," said SCGB chair Eurania Lopez.

All Student Center affairs are at some point discussed by the committee responsible for taking action in that field.

For instance, the Vendor Service Committee is responsible for the selection of Student Center vendors and contracts. They also do evaluations of vendors, monitor prices and deal with grievances.

The Master Plan Committee is responsible for planning the development of the Student Center building.

The Community Relations Committee is responsible for public relations and events held in the Student Center. This committee helped bring Jesse Jackson to campus earlier this month.

Other committees are rules, executive, elections, budget and personnel.

The Budget Committee is responsible for monitoring the budget, which for the fiscal year 1995-96 is $2.5 million. The SCGB collected the $2.5 million in their budget in three main ways.

Roughly $1.2 million was collected from student fees, another $1.2 million was collected from income generated by rent imposed on the 18 different student center tenants and vendors and $83,000 was generated from interest gained by the SCGB's local funds.
