Civil Rights activist Jesse Jackson will be on campus Thursday, Oct. 12 to speak at a rally in support of affirmative action.

The rally is being sponsored by various campus organizations including the Student Center Governing Board, The Student Council of Intertribal Nations and Diversity in Action.

The event is scheduled to coincide with Indigenous Peoples' Resistance Day. Vernon Belcourt, the president of the National American Indian Movement will speak prior to Jackson's address.

Jackson, who is scheduled to arrive on campus at 10 a.m., will speak on the main lawn in front of the J. Paul Leonard Library at 11 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes said Tharon Weighill, one of the organizers of the event.

Jackson, on a stop over in Northern California, will also attend a similar pro-affirmative action rally at UC Berkeley after his appearance at SF State, according to Weighill.

"We think it will be an active and festive day," Weighill said. "I think it will be an educational experience for all who attend."

Jackson's speech will be sandwiched by numerous workshops on affirmative action.

According to Campus Memo, a publication of the University's Public Affairs Office, students and faculty will be invited to participate in strategy sessions and a panel discussion moderated by President Robert A. Corrigan, all focusing on affirmative action. Corrigan will moderate a Dean's Debate on affirmative action. The debate is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and will take place in HSS 362.

From 3 to 5 p.m., representatives from the National Lawyers Guild will also speak on affirmative action, with the topic being "Defending Affirmative Action: Strategies for Advocates." This talk will take place in room B-118 of the Cesar Chavez Student Center.

Festivities on campus will get under way at 9 a.m. in the student center.
