Looking at who is contributing to a particular candidate's campaign can provide some insight into whose interests those candidates may serve if elected.
Since contributors are required to list their occupations, we thought we'd do it the other way around, and look at how employees of SF State are betting on this year's mayoral race.
Speaker emeritus Willie Brown has received the most support from SF State staffers in terms of dollars ($1,325) and in the number of contributors (10). Not that it will make much difference to his campaign, which had collected $1,405,859 through Oct. 21.
Former supervisor Roberta Achtenberg is next in popularity at SF State, with $1,000 from four contributors. Those dollars are undoubtedly more dearly appreciated in a campaign which is lagging in contributions, having managed to collect only $528,048 by the same date.
Frank Jordan did all right money-wise at SF State with $750, but two-thirds of that came from President Robert A. Corrigan. Corrigan, it will be noted, was hedging his bets with a last minute contribution to Brown. Jordan was second in the money race, having collected $1,142,739 by Oct. 21.
Special thanks to SF Chronicle columnist Herb Caen for giving us this idea, by publishing Corrigan's contribution to Jordan last spring. Caen wrote a check out to Brown's campaign in June for the maximum allowable $500.
