Propostion F could be a beginning in listening to San Francisco's youth. Assuming that if there was a youth commission the city government would actually listen, it's a good idea. The commission would be composed of 17 youth and chosen by both the supervisiors and the mayor.
Young people can't vote, yet government and voters are making decisions about their lives, with no input from the young people themselves. It's about time for this to change.
Proposition L asks whether to change the curfew, which currently applies to youth under 17. Prop L would include 17-year-olds, no longer require police to contact parents before "transporting" children and enact more restrictive curfew hours.
Young people need alternatives -- things to do, places to go, a sense of possibilities for the future -- rather than having fewer rights. Prop L would make children vulnerable to harassment and institutionalization, since if parents don't pick them up, or are not available, the children would be taken to Child Protective Services Center.
This proposition would punish children without making parents accountable.
Prop L would make things worse for everyone.
