Here we are, 1996 and off to war again. It seems that the United States can't keep itself out of others' business for more than four years. Whether it was Ronald Reagan's secret Dirty Wars in the 1980's or Bush's 1992 slaughter in the Persian Gulf, our passion to send Americans off to die is alive and well.
But wait. We are protecting peace, right? After all, that's what President Clinton says, although the factions in Bosnia have never ceased to amaze us with their desire for peace over the last four years.
The reports of senseless massacres and ethnic cleansing came out two years ago. What did the United States do then? Nothing. It was a huge mess that nobody on this side of the Atlantic wanted to look at or deal with. Now we can be heroes?
It is wrong for the United States, and President Clinton, to try to become heroes after all has been said and done.
This is a move that reeks of politics. Clinton has taken his show to Europe.
What about the domestic battles being waged over Medicare, welfare and the current budget crisis? Does running scared come to mind?
And the timing. Christmas is on the way, so are the 1996 elections. No American president has lost a bid for re-election with that many troops in a foreign land.
Our president has abandoned his own country for Europe. For the next year, it's going to be all bells and whistles and 'support our troops' -- with Clinton taking the credit to the election bank in November. Yuck.
This president promised us when he ran in '92 to bring the United States back together as a country, to be a domestic president. Now he is acting like George Bush.
All we are going to get in 1996 are two bills. The first -- $2 billion plus for the Bosnia thing, not to mention a possible body bag or two. Our second bill, Bill Clinton, could cost the United States much more if we re-elect him next year.
