Snyder, 28, is presently assistant city editor in charge or weekly theme rages.
Last fall she was a reporter covering the minority affairs beat.
A veteran of the Peace Corps, Snyder worked in Kenya from 1978 to 1980 with retarded children and was the chief administrator of a school for the mentally disabled.
She is fluent in both Swahili and a Kenyan tribal dialect, and has used sign language to interpret for deaf' students at a community college.
