And the Winner Is...

San Francisco State Journalism students win big in recent contests

[X]press Online was named the Best All-Around Online Student Newspaper in the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 11 Mark of Excellence competition. In other SPJ awards, [X]press Magazine garnered second place in the All-Around Magazine competition, photographer Kris Dale snagged first place for General News Photography, and Dariyoosh Hariri won third place for Sports Photography.

Jennah Ward won three awards in the National Press Photographers Association's College Pictures of the Year contest. She was awarded first place in the Feature category, honorable mention in the Picture Story category and honorable mention for General News. Sean Connelley won two awards from the NPPA. He was awarded a bronze medal for Sports Action and an award of excellence for Sports Feature Photography.

Ward also won first place in the Bay Area Press Photographers Association portfolio competition. Steve Babuljak won honorable mention in the contest.

Connelley won second place in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program's Feature and Sports Photography contest. In other Hearst awards, Ward won fifth place in the Photo Story competition, Gabriel Hacker won 10th place in the Photo Story competition. Golden Gater reporter David Ramstad tied for 18th place in the Spot News Writing contest.

Faculty member wins prestigious fellowship

San Francisco Chronicle reporter Yumi Wilson, who has taught Newswriting in the Journalism Department for several years, has won a fellowship to study at the University of Michigan for the 2000-2001 term. The fellowships allow journalists to spend eight months pursuing the studies of their choice. Wilson plans to study campaign finance reform. Check out the Chronicle article on Wilson.
