Millicent Mayfield has been named editor-in-chief of Golden Gate [X] press, the journalism department's new digital-and-print publication, which will premier in the Fall 2000 semester.
Mayfield, 27, will help set the course for the new publication, a merger of the Golden Gater newspaper, [X] press online and [X] press magazine.
Assisting her will be David Baker, 32, who will serve as managing editor for the weekly print publication, and Lakeisha McGee, 23, managing editor for the online publication.
The editors were selected April 10 by a team of faculty members and student editors.
"I'm really pleased with these three editors," said John Burks, chair of the department. "This looks like a group that can really pull off something new like this."
The journalism department faculty decided to merge the three publications to give each student experience in producing work for different media. The tabloid print edition, which will include a magazine section, will publish once a week on Thursdays and focus on the campus. The online publication will be updated up to four times a week and will offer a broader look at student life in the San Francisco Bay Area.
"This is an excellent opportunity for students to expand their horizons and gain a secure foothold in the career world," Mayfield said.
"It will be a challenge and somewhat difficult," added Baker, "but we're looking forward to the challenge."
The three editors bring to the new venture extensive experience on student publications.
Mayfield served on the Golden Gater staff for two semesters, first as a reporter, and this spring as managing editor. Baker was editor-in-chief of The Lariat, the student newspaper at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo. He also served as advertising manager, opinion editor and sports editor for the paper. McGee is a reporter this semester for [X] press online.
Assistant Professor Yvonne Daley will be the lead advisor for the publication. Professor Ken Kobre, Associate Professor Austin Long-Scott and lecturer Rachele Kanigel will also advise the publication.
