Journalism Scholarships

Since 1974, the Sacramento Press Club has offered scholarships to students who are preparing for a journalism career.  For 2006/07, at least three scholarships are available and they continue to be among the largest journalism awards in Northern California.

·         Up to $6,000 in honor of the late Earl “Squire” Behrens, a former political editor of the San Francisco Chronicle who covered the Capitol’s newsmakers for a half-century.

·         The Jean Stephens Scholarship, up to $3,000, in honor of the long-time Secretary-Treasurer for the Sacramento Press Club and a retired journalism instructor at Sacramento City College who was responsible for crafting the careers of thousands of professional journalists over a 30-year career.

·         A third award, up to $2,000

UPPER DIVISION STUDENTS:  Those who will have finished their second year of school and who will be enrolling as a junior or senior in the fall of 2007.

Applicants can be 1) from the Sacramento area attending local schools or schools out of the area OR 2) they can be students from out of the area who will be attending school in Sacramento.  For example, a Sacramento area student moving to a four-year school in San Francisco or Fresno would be eligible, as would a Los Angeles area student attending CSUS.

Applicants must be planning a career in journalism or a related communications field, such as media relations, photojournalism, or broadcasting.  A journalism major is not required.  Photojournalists, web masters, on-line writers and related majors are also encouraged to apply, as are majors in political science who have the intention of working in journalism.
