Scholarships
Since 1974, the Sacramento
Press Club has offered scholarships to students who are preparing for a
journalism career. For 2006/07, at least
three scholarships are available and they continue to be among the largest
journalism awards in
· Up to $6,000 in honor of the late Earl “Squire” Behrens, a former political editor of the San Francisco Chronicle who covered the Capitol’s newsmakers for a half-century.
· The Jean Stephens Scholarship, up to $3,000, in honor of the long-time Secretary-Treasurer for the Sacramento Press Club and a retired journalism instructor at Sacramento City College who was responsible for crafting the careers of thousands of professional journalists over a 30-year career.
· A third award, up to $2,000
UPPER DIVISION STUDENTS: Those who will have finished their second year of school and who will be enrolling as a junior or senior in the fall of 2007.

Applicants must be planning a career in journalism or a related communications field, such as media relations, photojournalism, or broadcasting. A journalism major is not required. Photojournalists, web masters, on-line writers and related majors are also encouraged to apply, as are majors in political science who have the intention of working in journalism.

WHAT WE NEED: Five copies of the following
1. A letter of approximately 400 words explaining how you will pursue a journalism or communications career and why. Of course, we would like to know what you have already done to prepare for such a career, including related experience outside the classroom (including internships) and the motivation for such a career. The letter should also explain the financial need for the scholarship.
2. A current transcript documenting the classes you have taken and your grades.

Clips, photographs, tapes or other samples of work. Limited to five examples and must fit on an 8 1/2 by 11 in. sheet of
paper, with no overlaps, for ease of copying.
Additional tear sheets or photos can be brought to the interviews. Photojournalism
students may bring their clip book to the interviews. On-line
journalists should submit the internet address for their publication.
4. A phone number where we can reach you on short notice and during normal business hours. Please include a home phone number and your e-mail address also.
5. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, academic advisor or supervisor

Interviews will be scheduled in April or early May with a panel of judges selected from the members of the Sacramento Press Club.
Scholarships are valid for the entire school year, but will be paid proportionally each semester or quarter, whichever is appropriate. The winners’ academic status will be reviewed before each portion of the scholarship is awarded to insure that recipients maintain full-time enrollment. Also, academic records will be reviewed to insure that grades remain equivalent to good standing as defined by the school.
